I have admired the work of Frank Tenney Johnson for many years, so I often referenced his masterpieces while working on this painting. I enjoyed exploring a darker, deeper color palette. I am also impressed with Remington's approach in his painting "A Dash for the Timber" where he painted the horses coming right at you, the viewer.
